ROUGH CUT - SUBTITLED (NO REPORTER NARRATION) The capture of the most wanted drug lord, Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, was the result of a months-long criminal and intelligence investigation, Mexican President Enrique Nieto said on Friday (January 8). "This morning, in the municipality of Los Mochis, Sinaloa, members of Mexican government security organizations were able to capture Joaquin Guzman Loera. His location, pursuit and recapture are the result of the joint efforts of intelligence, security and state law prosecutors offices," Nieto said. "It was the work of ongoing, valiant efforts from our institutions, that day and night, completed the mission I tasked them with: To recapture this criminal and bring him before the court. To all of you, I want to express my personal and institutional appreciation. I express to you the appreciation of all of Mexico. You are a source of pride for our nation. Mexico is very proud of all of them." Guzman, head of the powerful Sinaloa Cartel and who Pena Nieto first caught in February 2014, was captured in an early morning raid that killed five in the city of Los Mochis in the drug baron's native state of Sinaloa in northwest Mexico. He staged a jaw-dropping jail break in July, when he escaped through a mile-long tunnel which burrowed right up into his cell, heaping embarrassment on Pena Nieto. Once featured in the Forbes list of billionaires, Guzman's Sinaloa Cartel has smuggled billions of dollars worth of heroin, cocaine, marijuana and methamphetamines into the United States and fought vicious turf wars with other Mexican gangs.
