As somber music echoed through the building, the casket of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia was carried into the nation's largest Catholic church. U.S. political leaders crowded into the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington. Among the expected guests, Vice-President Joe Biden and Republican presidential candidate Senator Ted Cruz. (NAT SOUND) Reverend Paul Scalia, one of the justice's nine children, delivered the homily. A staunch conservative and the court's longest-serving member, Scalia died last Saturday at age 79. Justice Clarence Thomas, like Scalia a deeply religious conservative, read from the Bible. (NAT SOUND) Scalia's death leaves the court short one member as it prepares to decide its first major abortion case in nearly a decade, as well as cases on voting rights, affirmative action and immigration. But political differences were put on hold, as the country mourned the loss of a justice considered brilliant even by those who disagreed with his opinions.
