ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) Local media reported that Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton on Sunday (March 6) attended church services at three predominately African-American churches in Detroit's east side, ahead of Michigan's primary on Tuesday. Seeking support from members of the Holy Ghost Cathedral Church, Clinton said she wanted to help the region continue to make progress following years of bankruptcy, recession and mismanagement that have plagued the once vibrant city. "I want to be your partner as president to continue that progress to once again in give Detroit and Michigan the place of honor that you deserve," she said. Clinton has been outspoken about the lead-tainted water in nearby Flint and the leaders who did not quickly react to the crisis. The crisis in Flint, a predominantly black city of 100,000, outside of Detroit, was triggered when an emergency city manager installed by Governor Rick Snyder switched the city's water supply from Lake Michigan to the nearby Flint River to save money. The change corroded Flint's aging pipes and released lead and other toxins into the water supply, exposing thousands of residents including children to high lead levels that have sparked serious health problems. The crisis has sparked national outrage and led to calls for Snyder to resign. Clinton and her rival Bernie Sanders have both raced to condemn the water contamination and to criticize Republican Snyder for a slow state response, linking it to broader racial and economic inequities.
