Shortly after they removed his handcuffs at the start of his court case, Norwegian mass murderer, Anders Behring Breivik made the Nazi salute. (nazi salute) The militant right winger is serving a 21 year sentence in solitary confinement -- for massacring 77 people in 2011. But now, he's suiting the government from jail, saying his isolation is prison is in breach of the European Convention of Human Rights His lawyer, Oeystein Storrvik, made opening remarks. (SOUNDBITE)(Norwegian) BREIVIK'S LAWYER, OEYSTEIN STORRVIK, SAYING: "Many think that this is a case that has been raised so that Breivik can return to the public eye and come with an explanation, but it is simply a case about his incarceration for the rest of his life. And that, in my opinion, is important to establish." (file) Breivik's killing spree was unprecedented in Norway. He set off a car bomb in central Oslo, killing 8 and injuring more than 200 others. He then drove to a youth camp on a lake island, and methodically shot dead 69 people, wounding 33 others. Many of his victims -- just teenagers. (back to courts) Breivik said he was trying to protect Norway from Muslim immigration and multiculturalism, but he was tried and received the maximum sentence. His suits argues he should be allowed more visitors, more open correspondence, internet access and even a "family life". The government says there's no evidence the isolation is having a toll on Breivik, who's studying international relations at Oslo University from jail. There's no jury in this trial. A judge's verdict is expected in the coming weeks.
