ROUGH CUT - SUBTITLED (NO REPORTER NARRATION) The only thing that equates to the sacrifices of Syrian soldiers is the safety of the country, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said to injured soldiers in a video released on state television on Monday (March 21). The footage was aired on Syrian TV to mark Mother's Day in the country. It showed Assad and his wife, Asma, greeting injured soldiers. The video was shot earlier in March but an exact date was not provided. "No matter what the whole country offers it is not compared to what you have offered to the country. The only thing that is equal to the sacrifices you have offered, whether in soul, health or the body, is the safety of the country. When the country returns to health, I believe that every one of you will say I feel that my hand, my leg, my eye and my health are now healed," Assad said. The Syrian civil war, which erupted in 2011, has now lasted five years, killed more than 250,000 people and caused a refugee crisis of a massive scale. Last week, Syrian government and opposition party delegations met with U.N. mediator Staffan de Mistura in Geneva for peace talks. De Mistura describes Syria's political transition as "the mother of all issues" and after the latest week of talks, praised the opposition for the depth of their ideas, but criticized the veteran diplomats on the government side for getting bogged down.
