China vows to maintain security on the Korean peninsula, as the South says another ballistic missile test by the North has failed. Natasha Howitt reports.

South Korea says another intermediate-range ballistic missile test by the North has failed. The announcement comes just hours after Chinese President Xi Jinping said he would not allow security on the Korean peninsula to deteriorate. (SOUNDBITE) (Mandarin) CHINESE PRESIDENT XI JINPING SAYING: "As a permanent member of the U.N. Security Council, China fully and comprehensively implements relevant Security Council resolutions. As a close neighbour of the peninsula, we will absolutely not permit war or chaos on the peninsula. Once it happens, it would not benefit anyone." China is currently hosting the 26-nation Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia. The issue of North Korea and its intensified defiance of U.N. sanctions since January is in the spotlight. South Korea's Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se... (SOUNDBITE) (English) SOUTH KOREAN FOREIGN MINISTER, YUN BYUNG-SE, SAYING: "In this regard, I hope that CICA will play a special role in blocking advance in North Korea's nuclear weapons capabilities, and in stopping North Korea from conducting another nuclear test." The North is hosting a rare party congress meeting on May 6th, and appears to be upping its nationalist rhetoric. South Korea says it expects it to conduct its fifth nuclear test soon.
