Philippines prepare for election day

Security is tight around voting precincts as election inspectors make final preparations a day before the national polls. Julie Noce reports.

Preparations are underway in the Philippines a day before voters head to the polls to pick a new president, vice president and lawmakers. Security is tight at polling stations where some people have come to check if their name is on the registration list. We've already made a list of who to vote for, this man said. We just need to mark the names of our candidates. The race has seen weeks of intense campaigning with tough talking Rodrigo Duterte emerging as the clear front runner. Duterte has made headlines for his brash language and aggressive promises to wipe out crime and bring corruption under control. He's considered both a loose cannon and an entertainer and is often compared to Donald Trump. Executive Director of the Institute for Political and Electoral Reform, Ramon CAS-EEP-LAY Casiple. (SOUNDBITE) (English) EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE INSTITUTE FOR POLITICAL AND ELECTORAL REFORM (IPER), RAMON CASIPLE, SAYING: "I hope he changes his behavior but we cannot say for sure. What I know is that he will be an unconventional president to say the least." Duterte's closest contender is Grace Poe- who's pro-poor platform has resonated among Filipinos as has her life story: abandoned at a church as a baby and adopted by movie stars. There are about 54 million registered voters of the Philippines some 100 million population. Election officials say results could take up to three days.
