--RESENDING WITH UPDATED INFORMATION--- The growing controversy over transgender bathrooms has gained the attention of the White House. The letter, signed by officials from the Education and Justice Departments, is not bound by law, but contains an implicit threat. That schools choosing not to abide by the recommendation could face lawsuits or lose federal aid. The move comes as the Justice Department and North Carolina battle in federal court over the state's new law limiting public bathroom access for transgender people. SOUNDBITE: U.S. ATTORNEY GENERAL LORETTA LYNCH, SAYING: "They created state-sponsored discrimination against transgender individuals who simply seek to engage in the most private of functions." SOUNDBITE: NORTH CAROLINA GOVERNOR PAT MCCRORY (R), SAYING: "We believe a court rather than a federal agency should tell our state... what the law requires." The fight over transgender bathrooms is spilling over into other states including Texas, Michigan, Florida and Georgia, where the issue is up for debate.
