Iraqi forces are advancing into the northwestern outskirts of Falluja, as their fight to recapture the city from Islamic State militants continues. Over 50,000 civilians are believed to be trapped inside, and the UN has warned hundreds of families are being used as human shields. Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi announced plans to launch the assault on Falluja on May 22. He has appealed to politicians to unite behind the army, backed by world powers including the U.S. and Iran. Falluja was the first city to fall to Islamic State militants in January 2014. It is the second largest Iraqi city after Mosul to remain under their control.
