Venezuelans line up for bread

Amid a deteriorating economy, Venezuelans are trying to cope with product shortages across the board and, as Nathan Frandino reports, bakeries are on the front lines.

Lines stretch out the door and around the corner in what has become the norm in Venezuela. Here in Caracas, residents are waiting for bread...although they know they could be here for hours. (SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) CONSUMER, SONIA ARIAS, SAYING: "For some time now, this has been happening. And not only here, but in every single bakery in Caracas, at least." Wheat flour is just the latest commodity to have run dry. Now bakers are limiting their production and sales, leaving baguettes only for those willing to wait hours in line. President Nicolas Maduro blames the shortages on the opposition in what he calls a foreign-backed plan to overthrow him. But residents waiting in line have only one thing on their minds. Will there be any bread left by the time they get to the front.
