At least nine people are dead and some 100 security personnel reportedly injured in India's northern Jammu and Kashmir, the site of pitched battles over the killing of separatist militant Burhan Wani. The top commander of the militant outfit Hizbul Mujahideen was killed with two accomplices during an encounter with security forces on Friday. Government officials say protesters angry over his killing set police stations and government buildings on fire on Saturday in towns south of the state capital Srinagar. Earlier in the day, Srinagar and nearby areas observed a complete shutdown. But protests later turned violent, as demonstrators pelted stones at security personnel, who fired back with tear gas. Police said three police officers went missing in the violence and officials had yet to confirm their whereabouts. 22-year-old Wani made a call to arms on social media and fought against Indian control of Muslim-majority Kashmir bordering Pakistan. Internet service has been cut in the region and separatist political leaders are calling for a strike and three days of mourning.
