ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) STORY: Reporters Without Borders' Secretary General Christophe Deloire said on Sunday (July 10) that an investigation proves that Syrian President Bashar Al Assad's regime deliberately killed Marie Colvin in 2012, after the family of the American journalist filed a lawsuit against the Syrian government. Colvin's family filed a wrongful death lawsuit in a U.S. court, accusing the Syrian government of deliberately killing her, the New York Times reported on Saturday. "What the documents and testimonies collected during this four-year investigation make obvious it's that the Assad's regime were informed by a female informant that Marie Colvin and other journalists were in the media center in a flat in Homs and there were also interceptions of phone calls and after that it was deliberately decided to kill Marie Colvin and other journalists," Deloire told Reuters Television. Colvin and French photographer Remi Ochlik were killed in the besieged Syrian city of Homs in 2012 while reporting on the Syrian conflict, which is now in its sixth year. Colvin and Ochlik were both award-winning reporters of wars in the Middle East, Asia and elsewhere. The Britain-based Colvin, who lost an eye while working in Sri Lanka in 2001, was working for the Sunday Times at the time of her death. Deloire said the lawsuit and following proceedings would be useful in the fight against crimes against journalists. The lawsuit, filed in Washington, said Syrian officials deliberately targeted rockets against a makeshift broadcast studio where Colvin and other reporters were living and working. The lawsuit, to which the New York Time article provides an online link, said the attack was part of a plan orchestrated at the highest levels of the Syrian government to silence local and international media "as part of its effort to crush political opposition".
