ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION). In an interview broadcast on Sunday, U.S. President Barack Obama praised fellow Democrat Hillary Clinton's qualifications for president, saying the country has never had a candidate who was "more prepared" to be president. Speaking on CBS' "Face the Nation," Obama said Clinton is knowledgeable about domestic and foreign issues, and understands that accomplishing her goals will require compromise and persistence. In contrast, he said some of the plans proposed by Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump betray the ideals the country is founded upon. Obama made his comments as the Republicans wrapped up their nominating convention, in which they officially named Trump as their party's candidate for the general election in November. Democrats are preparing to officially name Clinton as their party's candidate at their national convention in Philadelphia this week.
