The social media craze that had millions of people dumping buckets of freezing water over their heads in the name of ALS raised enough money to lead to an important breakthrough in research. Linda So reports.

Remember the Ice Bucket Challenge? The social media craze from two years ago that had people from around the globe dumping buckets of ice-cold water over their heads to benefit ALS. Looks like the viral campaign made a difference after all. Money raised from the ice bucket challenge has led to an important breakthrough in ALS research. Scientists at the University of Massachusetts Medical School have identified a new gene that's responsible for the degenerative illness, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, which affects the function of nerves and muscles. The Ice Bucket craze had everyone from former presidents, to athletes and police officers getting dumped with freezing water to help find a cure for ALS.
