Russia's defense ministry says its military helicopter was carrying five people when it was shot down in the north of Syria's rebel-held Idlib province. It says the chopper was an Mi-8 military transport helicopter, on its way back to Russia's main air base in the western province of Latakia, after delivering humanitarian aid to the city of Aleppo, some 40 km north-east of the crash site. Russian air forces have been supporting President Bashar al-Assad in Syria's five-year-old civil war. Syrian government forces have a siege over rebel-held parts of eastern Aleppo city, where the helicopter had delivered its aid, but rebel groups there are staging an offensive to break it. The Russian defense ministry says the helicopter was carrying two officers and three crew members when it crashed, and social media video from the scene showed a body stripped of its clothes and Russian ID documents being taken from the helicopter.
