Erdogan meets Putin to reset relations

Turkish President Erdogan visits Russia on his first trip abroad since an attempted coup in an effort to mend relations with Vladimir Putin that hit a low point after Turkey downed a Russian jet last year. Ashraf Fahim reports.

It was all smiles in St. Petersburg, as Turkey and Russia hit the reset button on their strained relationship...Vladimir Putin greeting Turkish President Erdogan, who was full of praise for his Russian host. (SOUNDBITE) (Turkish) TURKISH PRESIDENT, TAYYIP ERDOGAN, SAYING (ACCORDING TO OFFICIAL TRANSLATION) : "The relations between Russia and Turkey entered into a really positive stage." But the détente has been several months coming. Russia and Turkey were at odds over the Syrian conflict when Turkey shot down a Russian fighter jet near the Syrian border last year, sending relations into a tailspin. But now, that all seems to be water under the bridge. (SOUNDBITE) (Russian) RUSSIAN PRESIDENT, VLADIMIR PUTIN, SAYING: "Your visit today means that we all want a renewal of our dialogue and restoration of our relations in the interests of Russian and Turkish peoples." It's Erdogan's first foreign trip since July's failed coup that has unleashed turmoil inside of Turkey…. and caused a chill in relations with the West. When it comes to disagreements with the west, Erdogan may well have found an ally in Putin..
