European leaders gather in Italy to discuss their future. But they first pay tribute to the past off the coast of Naples. Italian President Matteo Renzi, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande paid their respects at the tomb of Italian intellectual Altiero Spinelli, seen as one of the founding fathers of European unity. The visit was a symbolic gesture as the trio met to discuss the way forward for the European Union, following Britain's shock referendum in June to abandon the 28-nation bloc. They later boarded the Garibaldi for a final news conference (SOUNDBITE) (Italian) ITALIAN PRIME MINISTER, MATTEO RENZI, SAYING: "Many people thought that after Brexit Europe was finished. That isn't the case. We respect the choice of the British citizens but we want to turn a new leaf for the future." Merkel offered her assurances to other members of the EU. (SOUNDBITE) (German) GERMAN CHANCELLOR, ANGELA MERKEL, SAYING: "While we respect Great Britain's decision, we of course, want to reassure the other 27 countries that they can count on a safe and prosperous Europe." (SOUNDBITE) (French) FRENCH PRESIDENT, FRANCOIS HOLLANDE, SAYING: "The biggest risk Europe and the European countries face is disintegration, fragmentation, egotism and countries shutting themselves in. We have a responsibility to address that and we are assuming that responsibility here today." The meeting was designed to lay the groundwork for an EU summit in Bratislava next month.
