ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) Calling Donald Trump a "threat" to modern democracy, U.S. Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Kaine questioned whether the Republican presidential nominee would stand up to Russia if the Russian government ever hacked into the U.S. political system. Speaking to supporters at a rally in Erie, Pennsylvania, Kaine said, "Trump has publicly encouraged Russia to commit espionage and hack his political rivals... and when he was challenged on it, he said 'Well, I was just trying to be funny.' That guy has a weird sense of humor." Concerns have been growing that the Russian government is trying to undermine the U.S. presidential election, including by tampering with official election results. The FBI discovered breaches in voter registration databases in Illinois and Arizona but did not specify who might have been behind it. Officials and cyber security experts say recent breaches at the Democratic National Committee and elsewhere in the Democratic Party were likely carried out by people within the Russian government. Kremlin officials have denied that.
