NATURAL ROUGH CUT (no reporter narration). STORY: Eighteen leaders of the East Asia Summit donned traditional Laotian costume as they attended a gala dinner in Vientiane on Wednesday (September 7). Barack Obama, the first serving United States President to visit the landlocked kingdom, wore a deep blue silk shirt as he greeted Brunei King Hassanal Bolkiah and other heads of state. Filipino President Rodrigo Duterte also was there; he was seated next to Russian Prime Minister Dimitry Medvedev. Obama had been scheduled to meet with Duterte this week, but U.S. officials canceled it after Duterte made some comments critical of the U.S. and Obama. At the gala dinner, the leaders shared a toast before enjoying a late dinner accompanied by cultural performance. All leaders are due to meet formally in a multilateral meeting on Thursday (September 8), the last day of a three-day summit among world powers. After the meeting ends, Laos will officially hand over the rotating chairmanship to the Philippines.
