U.S. 'troubled' over Duterte Hitler reference

The U.S. defense secretary says he's deeply troubled over comments by the Philippines president in which he appeared to compare himself to Hitler. Paul Chapman reports.

(SOUNDBITE)(English) PHILIPPINES PRESIDENT RODRIGO DUTERTE SAYING: "At least Germany had Hitler, the Philippines has, you know, whatever, my victims I would like to be all criminals." Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte's drawn condemnation from U.S. Jewish groups for likening himself to Hitler. Noting that the the World War Two Nazi leader had killed millions of Jews, he said he would be happy to slaughter three million drug addicts in his own country. U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter's joined the criticism after hosting a meeting of his southeast Asian counterparts in Hawaii. (SOUNDBITE)(English) U.S. DEFENSE SECRETARY ASH CARTER SAYING: "That matter wasn't discussed at this particular meeting but i can can tell you that, just speaking personally for myself, I find those comments deeply troubling." Duterte's also ruled out further annual war games between the Philippines and the United States until the end of his six-year term. His hostility may make Washington's plan to switch its military focus towards Asia in the face of an increasingly assertive China more difficult to achieve.
