Mexico City gets fresh coat of paint

Seventy graffiti artists participate in the so-called ''Meeting of Styles'' gathering of muralists, who this year are giving Mexico city a new look. Gavino Garay reports.

These graffiti artists are breathing new life into Mexico City. They're taking part in an international event called the "Meeting of Styles." It's meant to give graffiti artists a platform to exchange ideas, and is held in various cities around the world. Spanish muralist 'Musa', among the seventy graffiti artists taking part, says geopolitics and physical space influence her work. (SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) 71-YEAR OLD SPANISH MURALIST, MUSA, SAYING: "You are always interacting with the city and of course if the city is different, the interaction is different. People ask different questions. People take it in different ways." The idea for the Meeting of Styles network began in Germany in the 1990s. And while urban graffiti is normally a blight for many big cities... Mexican authorities are giving these artists official permission to ply their trade and help revive parts of their city that have been forgotten.
