ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) STORY: Former president Bill Clinton made a case for gun control measures saying, "I grew up in the culture that is now Hillary's opponent's base," which enabled him to enact gun control measures. The former president, who spoke at an Iowa Democratic party early vote event at Simpson College, talked about his own successful efforts to curb gun use. " "We banned assault weapons for a decade, limited ammunition clips, had background checks," he said. "We had a 67 year low in gun violence," Clinton added. "Why was I able to do that?" he asked. "Because they couldn't convince anybody that I was going to take their gun away, cause I was governor of a state where we had to close the schools on the first day of deer season because nobody is going to come anyway." Earlier at the event when the lights flickered, Clinton joked, "I almost went into my stand up comedy routine." "I grew up in the culture that is now Hillary's opponent's base, some of them believe things that we will never believe and would never accept." A Reuters/Ipsos poll of likely voters, released on Tuesday, found 58 percent of Republicans wanted Trump to stay atop their party's ticket and 68 percent said the Republican leadership should stand by him. The poll, which was conducted after the second presidential debate on Sunday, showed Clinton's lead over Trump widening to 8 points from 5 points last week, before the release of the video.
