Thailand awakes to its first day in 70 years without King Bhumibol Adulyadej who has died at the age of 88. Paul Chapman reports.

Thailand's people revered their king as a father figure who steered the nation through times of change and turmoil. His death has come as a shock despite several years of poor health. The nation awoke on Friday for the first time in 70 years without the monarch. People gathered near the palace in Bangkok to pay their respects. (SOUNDBITE)(Thai) 27-YEAR-OLD YANEE PREMSUNGYA SAYING: "Since the news yesterday I feel lost and I don't know what to say. I feel as though my heart has been stabbed with a knife and ripped apart. I'm here today to bid him farewell." King Bhumibol Adulyadej stepped in on several occasions during his reign to calm crises. He was seen as a force for unity and there have long been concerns that without him the country's divisions could worsen. The prime minister's announced a year of mourning.
