Stampede kills 19 pilgrims in ancient Indian city

At least 19 people are killed in a stampede in the ancient northern city of Varanasi after hundreds of pilgrims panicked while crossing a bridge to get to a sacred Hindu site. Mana Rabiee reports.

The aftermath of a stampede in northern India that left at least 19 people dead and some 50 others injured. It happened during an annual Hindu religious gathering in the ancient city of Varanasi. Police say panic spread when hundreds of pilgrims tried to cross a bridge to get to a sacred site at the other side. This man says people were falling on top of each other. 'We were pushed from the back,' he says. 'Me and my mother were hit. Many people died.' Millions of Hindus come to Varanasi every year to wash away their sins in the sacred river Ganges. Some 100 police have been deployed to deter more pilgrims from entering the religious site near the bridge.
