Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro gathered supporters Tuesday to downplay a growing opposition against him. Earlier Tuesday the opposition-led National Assembly voted in favor of opening a political trial against him for 'violating democracy'. Maduro said the assembly had one objective: "...to damage Venezuela, he said. We won't allow a parliamentary coup of any kind here." The opposition has accused Maduro of veering into dictatorship by sidelining legislature and detaining opponents. The country is in the throes of a crippling recession that has many poor families struggling to find affordable food. The opposition estimates about one million anti-government protesters flooded Caracas early last month in the biggest demonstration for over a decade.
