Syrian opposition appears resigned Aleppo will fall

The Syrian opposition meets with its backers including France and the U.S. for talks in Paris, as the Syrian government claims victory in retaking the rebel-held eastern half of the city. Mana Rabiee reports.

In Paris -- resignation -- among the Syrian opposition, that the fall of eastern Aleppo was inevitable. With the Syrian government claiming it controls 93 percent of the city, backers of the opposition re-group in Paris, including France, Britain, Turkey and Saudi Arabia. PLUS the United States -- ... as an exasperated Secretary of State John Kerry tells the Syrian government and its ally in the war, Russia -- to show "grace" when officials meet for separate talks in Geneva for a plan to let civilians and fighters leave the beleaguered city. (SOUNDBITE) (English) UNITED STATES SECRETARY OF STATE, JOHN KERRY, SAYING: "Russia and Assad have a moment here where they are obviously in a dominant position, they have an ability to show a little grace. And sometimes in diplomacy, a little grace goes a long way." In the spate of about two weeks, the Syrian government and its allies drove fighters in rebel-held eastern Aleppo out of almost all their territory. Video released by the Russian defense ministry claims to show some 20,000 civilians leaving eastern Aleppo on Saturday. Syrian President Bashar al-Assad says retaking the city changes the course of the war itself. His allies joined him in saying victory was near.
