ROUGH CUT. NO REPORTER NARRATION. Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen received a hero's welcome upon her arrival in San Francisco, where she was greeted by well-wishers waving American and Taiwanese flags at the Hyatt Regency SFO airport hotel on Friday (January 13). The Taiwanese leader made the stop in San Francisco on her way back from a visit to Central America. Earlier on Thursday (January 12), President Tsai visited San Salvador, El Salvador as part of her diplomatic visit to Central America. Honduras, Nicaragua, and Guatemala and El Salvador were also on her itinerary in Central America. Her trip comes at a time when China suspects she is seeking formal independence from the mainland. On her way to Central America, President Tsai met senior U.S. Republican lawmakers during her stopover in Houston. During her brief visit to San Francisco before returning to Taiwan, she attended a dinner in her honour, local media reported. Beijing regards the one-China policy as the basis of its relations with the United States.
