London Orchid festival chooses India as theme

For the 22nd annual orchid festival in London's Kew Gardens, organisers choose India's exotic horticulture as the theme. Jayson Mansaray reports.

In London's Kew Gardens glasshouse, a life-size model of an elephant, a tiger and a peacock. This year, for the 22nd annual Orchid Festival, the theme is India. SOUNDBITE: Elisa Biondi, Festival Creator, saying (English): "We thought that choosing this theme it will give a chance for Kew to talk about conservation and the importance of plants, but also the importance of the relationship between plants and human beings." Orchids in their thousands can be found in pots as part of wall sculptures or hanging luxuriously from the roof. SOUNDBITE: Elisa Biondi, Festival Creator, saying (English): "It's about...wow, I think a hundred or more people involved. In terms of plants this year we have got about 5,600 plants and 3,600 of them are orchids." The festival is on from February 4th or March 5th - a chance to take in India's exotic horticultural offering.
