Trudeau tells EU: the world needs you

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau praised the European Union as an unprecedented model for peaceful cooperation, in a speech to EU lawmakers that contrasted sharply with the critical stance of U.S. President Donald Trump. Fred Katayama reports.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told the European Union " the world needs you," saying it has as crucial global role to play. Speaking at the European Parliament, he called the EU an unprecedented model for peaceful cooperation. He said this one day after the Parliament backed a comprehensive free trade deal between Canada and the EU, known as the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement or CETA. That trade deal and Trudeau's appreciation of Europe is a sharp contrast to U.S. President Donald Trump's critical view of his trade partners across the Atlantic. (SOUNDBITE) GARY HUFBAUER, REGINALD JONES SENIOR FELLOW, PETERSON INSTITUTE FOR INTERNATIONAL ECONOMICS, (ENGLISH) SAYING: "President Trump has a lot of other distractions right now. And, my guess is, he hasn't noticed whatever Prime Minister Trudeau is saying to the European Parliament becasue he has so many other worries. But, when he does get around noticing it, I think that Trump has take a distant relationship to Europe, and doesn't feel that the European Union such an essential part of his geopolitical strategy at the moment." Trump has withdrawn from the Trans-Pacific Partnership and wants to rework the North American Free Trade Agreement. For Canada, CETA will help it reduce its reliance on the United States as an export market.
