U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara says he's been fired... one day after the Justice Department asked him and 45 other federal prosecutors who had served under Democratic President Barack Obama to resign. Bharara making the announcement on Twitter, saying, quote "I did not resign. Moments ago I was fired." His dismissal coming after he refused to resign from the post. Although U.S. attorneys are political appointees, and the request from President Donald Trump's Justice Department is part of a routine process, the move came as a surprise. Bharara had met with Trump in November after the election and told reporters then that he had agreed to stay on. He had overseen many high profile cases, including the lifetime settlement against Times Square bomber Faisal Shahzad, and the $1.8 billion insider-trading settlement against the hedgefund SAC Capital Advisors, the largest in history. Bharara called being the U.S. Attorney in the Southern District of New York the greatest honor of his professional life.
