ROUGH CUT. NO REPORTER NARRATION. Around a thousand dogs and their owners took part in a fun run in Manila on Saturday (March 18) to promote a more pet-friendly environment and responsible canine ownership. Ranging from the small chihuahua to the large chow chow, dogs of various breeds ran alongside their owners and met other pooches in the 1.5 kilometer race track. Some dogs and owners also ran in longer races ranging from three to five kilometers. Dog owner Mel Cordiva, who has participated in the annual fun run for the past four years, said the event allows her to bond closer with her pet terrier. Event organizer Janine Ngo said the gathering of hundreds of dogs will help raise awareness about the unfriendly conditions in the country for pets and their owners such as the danger for canines in busy streets and lack of places for them to leave their waste. Owners and their dogs who complete the run are given bags filled with various grooming materials and pet food. Participants also had their pictures with their "best friends" as a souvenir. Part of the proceeds from the event will be donated to a local non-government organization for animal welfare, organisers said.
