ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) STORY: Actress Kate del Castillo is pulling from her real-life drama for her new fictional series "Ingobernable." In 2016 del Castillo and actor Sean Penn made headlines after meeting with Mexican drug kingpin Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman while he was in hiding after escaping from prison. That interaction brought on criticism from fans and legal troubles. "I cannot, not tell the analogy. This is a woman who's tried to prove her innocence. This is a woman who's been persecuted by the government. This is a woman who's been criticized or under scrutiny for something that she didn't do wrong. She's not a criminal, you know?," she said of her character. "I was treated like one in Mexico, in my country. All those things, she risked her life, she's in danger, all of those things. I live them in mine. So the body reacts to those things." del Castillo said she doesn't regret the meeting that she took regarding making a film on Guzman's life and still hopes to make the biopic. The Netflix show stars del Castillo as Mexico's first lady on the run after she is famed for her husband's murder. "We are living in a very dark time right now in Mexico. So playing the first lady for me was a challenge. It has no resemblance at all with the real first lady. But we do go to certain moments in Mexico and issues in Mexico that have been hurting us for a long time." del Castillo said the drama shows the wealthy and powerful side of the Mexico, which is something she feels is rarely highlighted. "Ingobernable" is available for streaming on Netflix.
