ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) Demonstrators clashed with police in Santiago on Tuesday (May 9) during a student-led march for better education reform. Student groups came together under the banner "End debt," part of a demand to call for debt forgiveness for students who owe to the CAE credit system used in Chile. Police in armoured vehicles sprayed tear gas and water cannon at demonstrators, many of whom fired back throwing rocks, sticks and other objects at the vehicles as well as at police dressed in riot gear. Several demonstrators were detained by police and local media reported high school students were among those arrested. Thousands took part in the march through the capital city which passed several government buildings on its way to the Moneda presidential palace. For years, Chileans have been protesting for increased spending on education and against education reform which would increase private involvement in education.
