ROUGH CUT. NO REPORTER NARRATION. German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier met Palestinian counterpart Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah on Tuesday (May 9), as part of his official visit to the region. Speaking at a news conference with Abbas, Steinmeier said the changes in the region require a new Israeli-Palestinian peace drive. Steinmeier's visit comes after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu cancelled talks last month with German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel over his meeting with groups critical of Israel's treatment of Palestinians. The dispute threatened to widen a rift between Israel and Germany over Jewish settlement building in the Israeli-occupied West Bank by Netanyahu's right-wing government.
