Cinema fans hoping to get a bird's eye view of the movie stars at Cannes have been left disappointed. That's after security removed their step ladders. Barricades have been put in place and they'll be manned by police officials when the actors arrive for their photo-calls. And many festival regulars - previously used to getting plenty of photographs and autographs - aren't happy. (SOUNDBITE) (French) AMATEUR PHOTOGRAPHER AND CANNES FILM FESTIVAL FAN, MARTINE SANTORO, SAYING: "I feel a bit revolted, of course, because our most beautiful photos were taken here - and our most beautiful autographs. The stars are really relaxed here, when they're not under the pressure of the red carpet." France is under a state of emergency in the wake of numerous terrorist attacks. This edition of the film festival is the first since an attack in nearby Nice last July, when at least 80 people were killed after a Tunisian man drove a truck into a crowd celebrating Bastille Day. The Cannes local police chief says he's acting in everyone's best interest. (SOUNDBITE) (French) HEAD OF CANNES MUNICIPAL POLICE, YVES DAROS, SAYING: "I think that everyone really wants to show that we're fighting against terrorism... It's important to show the stars that are going to come that there is a certain calm, renewed confidence in security, and a strong desire to fight against terrorism." And authorities are taking any potential threat very seriously. They've installed about 550 security cameras, a row of 400 shoulder-high flowerpots acting as discreet concrete barriers and 160 metres of spiked chains that can stop a truck. Extra forces will be deployed and a battalion of civilian volunteers have been roped in to inform police of any suspicious activity. The Cannes Film Festival officially launches on Wednesday.
