Gay-themed traffic lights are getting Madrid into the mood for the WorldPride festivities to be held in the Spanish capital from June 23 through July 3. 72 traffic lights will be programmed to show male or female gay couples -- in red for stop and green for go -- replacing the usual single, gender-neutral figure. Recently, 12 lights were ready, attracting the attention of pedestrians. 82-year-old Maria Antonia is a resident of Madrid's well known gay neighborhood, Chueca. SOUNDBITE: Maria Antonia, Chueca resident, saying (Spanish): "I am not surprised at all, because I have lived around this square for so many years that I am totally familiar with everything. I am not surprised at all by anything whatsoever. So here we are for their party. We will just hang in there. But, anyway, they don't mess with anyone. They live their own way and everyone should just do the same." The campaign is intended to foster gender and gay equality given their visual impact, and as a legacy of the WorldPride festivities, which are expected to bring visitors from all over the world, according to Madrid City Hall's website. The new look of the traffic lights will not be changed after the WorldPride celebrations.
