ROUGH CUT - NATURAL (NO REPORTER NARRATION) Swathes of Italy are burning after months with little rainfall. According to local media reports, wildfires raged in several areas from Tuscany and Liguria in the northwest and central Italy to the south, Sardinia and Sicily on Sunday (July 16). The fire department released video of firefighting aircraft putting out fires in the woods near the northwestern city of Genoa on Saturday (July 15), while helicopters were being used in other parts of the country. In a statement Italy's civil protection agency said the request for emergency planes was the highest in ten years. Temperatures have soared above 40 degrees Celsius (104°F) in arid southern regions. Blazes on the slopes of Mount Vesuvius have sent vast clouds of smoke into the air near the port city of Naples. The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) said thousands of people, animals, and a nature reserve were at risk around the volcano. Meanwhile, drought in the northern agricultural provinces of Parma and Piacenza prompted the government last week to declare states of emergency.
