ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) STORY: Elvis Presley fans participated in the first annual "Elvis of Asia" contest in Manila on Saturday (August 19). Twenty three participants from the Philippines, Thailand, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia and Australia joined the contest as tribute to the 40th death anniversary of the King of Rock and Roll. Each participant donned various costumes with signature sideburns as they shimmied, gyrated and belted out classics like "I've Lost You," "You Gave Me a Mountain" and "Jailhouse Rock." Contestants were judged on their appearance and their ability to imitate the charisma of their idol. Filipino participant Jun Espinosa took the first place and received a free trip to Elvis' hometown in Graceland. Contest organizer Douglas Masuda, who heads the Elvis Presley Friendship Club Philippines, said they wanted to immortalize the legacy of their idol and reach out to the younger generation. Elvis Presley died suddenly at age 42 on August 16, 1977 from heart failure after battling health problems including weight gain and a dependency on prescription drugs.
