India arrests highlight growing violence aimed at Africans

Indian police put five people in cuffs for beating up several Nigerian students outside Delhi, the latest attack on Africans in the country. Ryan Brooks reports.

An alarming surge of violence targeting Africans in India. Police arresting five people this week in connection with an attack at a shopping mall near New Delhi that left four Nigerian students battered in the hospital (SOUNDBITE) (English) AN INJURED NIGERIAN NATIONAL, SAYING: "I don't drink. I don't do any stupid thing in this country but for Indians to come and attack me just for no reason, I don't know what to say." Police haven't officially given a motive for the attack, but this angry crowd rallied just outside the mall while it was happening They believe a local teenager died from an overdose, and that Nigerians students gave him the drugs. It's part of a far wider spate of aggression targeting Africans. On Wednesday a group of men dragged this young Kenyan woman out a taxi and beat her. So far, no motive has been made clear. And last year on top of several attacks, a Congolese man was stoned to death by a mob after getting in an argument with a cab driver. Nigeria has praised Indian police for making swift arrests after the mall attack. But it also issued a warning, urging its citizens in India to stay vigilant.
