ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) STORY: Seven contestants from around the U.S. put their best and smelliest foot forward at the Odor-Eaters 42nd National Rotten Sneaker Contest in New York on Tuesday (March 28). Twelve-year-old Connor Slocombre claimed the honor of having the worst smelling sneaker after three attempts in the contest. Contestants were judged on the odor outside and inside the shoe by a team of four judges that included a NASA certified master sniffer. Techniques for developing the prudent smells included never wearing socks, stepping in poop and walking through creeks. The winner walked away with $2,500, Broadway show tickets and is inducted into the Odor Eaters Hall of Fumes. A Vermont sporting goods store owner started the competition in 1974 as a way to promote a new line of sneakers. Foot care company, Odor-Eaters became the official sponsor of the contest in 1988.
