UPDATE 1-ASM International reports record Q4 orders, sees further outperformance

(Adds details)

Feb 21 (Reuters) - Dutch chipmaker ASM International said on Thursday that its fourth-quarter order intake totalled a record high 301.6 million euros ($342 million), well above its forecast, as well as a better-than-expected revenue.

It said its fourth-quarter revenue totalled 254.7 million euros and it forecast revenue of 225 million-245 million euros in the first quarter of 2019 and 200 million-230 million euros in the second quarter.

The company said its normalised net earnings totalled 46.1 million euros for the fourth quarter, up from a restated 36.6 million euros a year earlier.

Semiconductor firms have recently been hit by trade frictions between the United States and China, which contributed to a slowdown in the car business, and the smartphone market including Apple cooling after years of headlong growth.

However, ASM International said it expected this year to outperform the market for wafer fabrication equipment, which it said will decline, according to general expectations.

The company said it did deliver on its goal to outgrow the market in 2018 by growing its sales year-on-year by 17 percent on a U.S. dollar basis.

At the beginning of November 2018, ASM International shares topped the Stoxx 600 index with a 10.5 percent gain after third-quarter revenue came in above the consensus and a better-than-expected fourth-quarter guidance.
