Brazil's new budget targets approved at congressional committee

SAO PAULO, Aug 30 (Reuters) - Brazil’s joint congressional committee late on Tuesday approved softened budget targets for 2017 and 2018, leaving the goals ready for a final plenary vote ahead of an August 31 deadline.

Brazil’s government proposed earlier this month a new primary deficit target of 159 billion reais ($50 billion) for this year and next, a looser goal than its previous aim of 139 billion reais this year and 129 billion reais for 2018. (Reporting by Bruno Federowski; Editing by Hugh Lawson)
