BRIEF-Leroey Seafood wins preliminary backing for experimental fish farm design

Sept 11 (Reuters) - Leroey Seafood Group Asa

* Norway’s Fisheries Directorate gives preliminary backing to experimental fish farm design by Leroey Seafood Group to produce salmon and trout, the regulator said in a statement

* Leroey has applied for 9 development licences for its “pipefarm” concept

* Directorate says needs additional information to give final approval and to decide how many licenses it will allow

* Directorate did not say when it would make final decision

* Development licences are part of an initiative by the Norwegian Industry and Fisheries Ministry to spur growth in Norway’s salmon production

* To be awarded a licence under the scheme, companies must show that their plans bring technological innovation while also adhering to strict environmental and animal welfare procedures
