Brazil posts consumer price deflation in April, biggest monthly fall since 1998

BRASILIA, May 8 (Reuters) - Brazilian consumer price inflation, as measured by the IPCA index, fell 0.31% in April, government statistics agency IBGE said on Thursday, more than the 0.2% fall economists in a Reuters poll had expected and the lowest reading since 1998.

Prices rose 2.40% in the 12 months through April, also less than the median forecast of 2.49% and the lowest annual rate of inflation since February 1999. (Reporting by Jamie McGeever )
