Italy - Factors to watch on Jan. 24

MILANO, Jan 24 (Reuters) - The following factors could affect Italian markets on Thursday.

ECONOMY

ISTAT releases December non-EU foreign trade (0900 GMT).

The Italian economy will grow much more strongly than expected in 2019, with output likely to jump in the second half of the year, Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte told Reuters on Wednesday.

DEBT

Treasury announces sale of 6-month BOT bills, with relative amounts to be auctioned on Jan. 29.

TOD’S

Italian fashion group Tod’s said like-for-like sales for 2018 fell 3 percent due to a worsening of the performance in Italy and the rest of Europe in the fourth quarter.

BANCA CARIGE

Italy’s banking system is stable and well capitalised, Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said on Wednesday, adding that the state was nonetheless ready to jump in and help troubled domestic lender Carige if needed.

(*) A private equity fund could underwrite the lender’s proposed 400 million euro cash call and take it over to turn it into a challenger bank, Corriere della Sera reported citing investment bankers working on the deal.

(*) There have been expressions of interest for Carige but before they can be formalised the bank must ready its business plan, special administrator Raffaele Lener told Il Sole 24 Ore.

(*) Adviser UBS has sped up the search for a merger partner and Carige top executives could unveil the name of the potential buyer by the middle of next month, MF reported, adding UniCredit was the most likely name but had set very strict conditions for the acquisition.

GENERALI

Generali said on Wednesday it would exercise an early redemption option on two perpetual notes.

FIAT CHRYSLER

Lawyers for Fiat Chrysler diesel owners have asked a U.S. judge to approve up to $106.5 million in legal fees and out-of-pocket costs for a settlement over excess vehicle emissions.

(*) ATLANTIA

The infrastructure group’s Autostrade per l’Italia unit has paid 115 million euros to buy the houses that are located under the collapsed Genoa bridge, Il Sole 24 Ore reported.

(*) INTESA SANPAOLO

The bank wants to further speed up the reduction of its impaired loans and an announcement could come with the presentation of full-year results on Feb. 5, CEO Carlo Messina was quoted as saying in Davos by Il Sole 24 Ore.

(*) PARMALAT

Lactalis is reorganising its business and moving to France operational control of the Italian dairy group ahead of its de-listing, Il Sole 24 Ore reported.

(*) TELECOM ITALIA

CEO Luigi Gubitosi is close to giving Rothschild and Vital & Co a mandate to study possible solutions for the fixed-line network, Corriere della Sera reported.

Canada Pension Plan Investment Board has increased its stake in the telecoms group from the May level of 2.3 percent though remaining below the 5 percent disclosure threshold, Il Messaggero reported. Also the Ontario Teachers Pension Plan has increased its stake from 0.4 percent with support from Bluebell Advisors. It also switched side and now supports Elliott against Vivendi.

GEFRAN

Gefran unit said on Wednesday it had bought Elettropiemme for 900,000 euros.

Milan, news conference to present report on “Game & Young” with Unipol Group Chairman Pierluigi Stefanini (0930 GMT).
