Team by team analysis of the Malaysian Grand Prix

(Reuters) - Team by team analysis of Sunday’s Malaysian Formula One Grand Prix (listed in championship order):

MERCEDES (Lewis Hamilton 2, Valtteri Bottas 5)

Hamilton started on pole position, the 70th of his career, but was passed by Verstappen on lap four and never had the pace to challenge. The podium was his ninth of the season. He stretched his overall lead to 34 points with five races remaining. Bottas struggled and was passed by Vettel, who had started in last place. Mercedes increased their constructor’s lead to 118 points.

FERRARI (Sebastian Vettel 4, Kimi Raikkonen did not start)

Raikkonen qualified second but a loss of power on the way to the grid meant he did not start. Vettel was last on the grid after power unit problems in qualifying but was up to 13th at the end of the first lap and set the fastest lap of the race. He had a bizarre collision with Williams’ Stroll after the finish that left his car on three wheels and could have big repercussions if the gearbox is damaged.

RED BULL (Max Verstappen 1, Daniel Ricciardo 3)

Verstappen celebrated his second win in Formula One, a day after his 20th birthday. He started third. It was his first podium since China in April and only the second this year, ending a run of bad luck and retirements. Ricciardo, last year’s winner, started fourth. It was his eighth podium of the season.

FORCE INDIA (Sergio Perez 6, Esteban Ocon 10)

Perez raced while suffering from a virus, in what he said was probably the hardest race of his career. Ocon made contact with Massa’s Williams at the start and had a puncture, forcing him to pit on lap two. He was also in a collision with Sainz later on, causing the Frenchman to spin. Force India strengthened their fourth place.

WILLIAMS (Lance Stroll 8, Felipe Massa 9)

A double points finish for Williams, who pulled away from Toro Rosso. Massa dropped to 10th at the end of the first lap after the contact with Ocon. The team swapped around Stroll and Massa, who had made contact at the start, after the pitstops with both doing a long second stint. Stroll and Vettel collided after the finish.

TORO ROSSO (Pierre Gasly 14, Carlos Sainz retired)

Gasly made his Formula One race debut in place of Russian Daniil Kvyat and got through it despite his drink system not working in one of the most gruelling rounds on the calendar. He said the water went all over his face and not in his mouth. Sainz retired with an electrical issue on lap 32.

RENAULT (Jolyon Palmer 15, Nico Hulkenberg 16)

No change in the standings for Renault. Palmer spun twice, once after a coming together with Magnussen. The British driver had scored a point at Sepang last year. Hulkenberg made two stops, the second for safety reasons due to tyre wear.

HAAS (Kevin Magnussen 12, Romain Grosjean 13)

Magnussen started 17th, Grosjean 16th. The Dane was ninth after the first lap but then fell back after battles with Palmer and Alonso. Grosjean dropped to 19th after the first lap when Gasly forced him wide. He made two pitstops.

MCLAREN (Stoffel Vandoorne 7, Fernando Alonso 11)

Vandoorne qualified seventh and equalled his best race result, repeating his seventh in Singapore, as McLaren made up some ground on the three teams ahead of them. They are now 14 points behind Haas. Alonso lost out at the start and had several battles as he fought for a point that just eluded him.

SAUBER (Pascal Wehrlein 17, Marcus Ericsson 18)

Wehrlein’s most notable moment of the race was after the finish when he gave Vettel a lift on his car after the collision with Stroll.
