Poland's manufacturing recovery slows in August -PMI

WARSAW, Sept 1(Reuters) - Polish manufacturing activity improved more slowly in August than in the previous month, as demand stagnated amid concerns about a second wave of coronavirus cases, a survey showed on Tuesday.

IHS Markit’s Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) for manufacturing fell to 50.6 in August from 52.8 in July. The reading was above the 50.0 line that separates growth from contraction, but below the 52.9 forecast by analysts in a Reuters poll.

Output rose for the only the second time since October 2018, but the overall volume of new orders remained unchanged from July. Employers continued to shed staff, but at a slower rate.

“The recovery in business conditions in the Polish manufacturing sector continued in August,” said Trevor Balchin, economics director at IHS Markit.

“Manufacturers remained confident of growth of production over the next 12 months, but sentiment was weaker than in July, mainly reflecting concerns over a potential second wave of COVID-19 and any retightening of restrictions.” (Reporting by Alan Charlish; Editing by Catherine Evans)
