South African unions to sign wage agreement in the engineering sector

JOHANNESBURG, Aug 22 (Reuters) - Two major unions said on Tuesday they will sign a new wage agreement in the engineering sector, quelling fears of an industry strike.

Trade union Solidarity and the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) said they will sign a three-year wage agreement with the Steel and Engineering Industries Federation of South Africa (SEIFSA) on Wednesday.

NUMSA, which had previously demanded wage hikes of 15 percent across the board, said in July they had requested a certificate to strike in the engineering sector after wage talks reached deadlock. (Reporting by Tanisha Heiberg, editing by Louise Heavens)
