SYDNEY (Reuters) - Australia coach Graham Arnold has included injured midfielder Aaron Mooy and recalled Perth Glory forward Chris Ikonomidis in his squad for the Socceroos’ Asian Cup title defence in the United Arab Emirates.
Mooy was ruled out of the Jan. 5-Feb. 1 tournament by his Premier League club Huddersfield Town after sustaining a knee injury but Arnold said he would be given another chance to prove his fitness with a medical test by an independent specialist this week.
Ikonomidis was omitted from Arnold’s squads for Asian Cup warmups against South Korea and Lebanon but has been named after strong performances in the domestic A-League, Arnold told reporters in Sydney on Thursday.
The 23-year-old comes in at the expense of regular forward Tomi Juric who has struggled for game time with Swiss club FC Luzern.
Australia, under former coach Ange Postecoglou, won the 2015 tournament on home soil.
