RIO DE JANEIRO (Reuters) - Everton scored an injury-time goal with a backheel to give Gremio a 1-0 win at Fluminense on Saturday and lift them into joint-second place in the Brazilian Serie A table.
The winger ran on to a threaded pass and as the keeper tried to shepherd him away from goal he backheeled the ball into the net.
“This is a magic phase for me, and there’s nothing better than scoring a goal like that,” Everton, who was recently called up to the Brazil squad for the first time, told Globo after the game.
“It was improvised. I was going to hit it as I turned. But I saw that Julio Cesar was close.”
The win takes Gremio up to 50 points, alongside Palmeiras and city rivals Internacional, both of whom play on Sunday.
